Left Palermo and headed south through the centre of Sicily
towards Agrigento. Got there about 12
and went straight to one of the big attractions in Sicily – Valley of the
Temples. A couple of significant temples
from the Greek reign here in about 500BC.
Of course the site has been invaded and had a few make-overs since then
but it is still very impressive.
Being Italy the ‘Valley’ where the temples are is on a high
ridge with views to Agrigento and the other way towards the sea. A very hot day today so when we finished
there we went to our B&B then headed for the beach.
Very quiet on the roads and at the beach, couldn’t find a
restaurant opening before 8pm so we lowered ourselves to having McDonalds on
the way home from the beach. Got home,
had a shower and went out about 8 to have a look at the temples lit up. They looked great but couldn’t get a photo,
couldn’t get close enough on the road and we weren’t going to pay to go into
the site again. What did surprise us –
the crowds, the roads were packed, there were people everywhere.
We don’t understand these Italians – they don’t come alive
till after dark and when they do it is at full pace. Glad to get back to the safety of our place
and relax with a red wine.

Not much left of this one though. |

The place was like a desert today and the vegetation matched the temperature. |
